Nigeria's Super Eagles Slip to 40th Position in Latest FIFA Coca-Cola World Ranking
The Super Eagles of Nigeria have experienced a slight dip in the latest FIFA Coca-Cola world ranking, dropping from the 39th position in the June rankings to the 40th spot. This change comes despite their convincing 6-0 victory against Sao Tome and Principe in the AFCON qualifiers.
The updated ranking, published on FIFA's official website on Thursday, September 21, 2023, sees the Super Eagles placed sixth in Africa. They stand behind the likes of 2022 FIFA World Cup semi-finalists Morocco (1st), 2021 AFCON winners Senegal (2nd), Tunisia (3rd), Algeria (4th), and Egypt (5th).
At the top of the global ranking, world champions Argentina have consolidated their position with a 1-0 win against Ecuador and a 3-0 away victory against Bolivia in the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers. Meanwhile, second-placed France lost some ground to Argentina after a 2-1 friendly defeat against Germany.
The top five spots in the ranking remain unchanged, with Brazil in 3rd, England in 4th, and Belgium in 5th. Croatia holds the 6th position, followed by the Netherlands at 7th, and Portugal at 8th—the only team among the top ten to climb a position. Italy slipped to 9th after a 1-1 draw against North Macedonia in the UEFA EURO 2024 qualifier, and former World Cup and three-time European champions Spain round out the top ten.
